While planning for their comprehensive school reform programs,
many schools choose to select a whole-school reform model to support
their program in one or more areas, including an overall philosophy
or focus, specific instructional strategies, professional development,
parental involvement, and technical assistance. While there is a
growing body of research on models, only a small portion of these
studies meets the highest standards for scientifically based research.
It is also important to consider that the compendia of models currently
available meet criteria for research quality developed prior to
the onset of the new legislation.
Resources on School Reform Models:
The Catalog of School Reform Models
Produced jointly by the National Clearinghouse for Comprehensive
School Reform (NCCSR) and the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory
(NWREL), the Catalog of School Reform Models is designed to help
educators find externally developed reform models that meet the
needs of their school. It provides descriptions of whole-school
models plus additional entries on reading/language arts, mathematics,
and science models. Models accepted for inclusion in the catalog
have met criteria in four areas, one of which is on the strength
of the evidence of effectiveness. The criteria
for inclusion were developed in 2000, prior to the new federal
legislation on SBR. For each model entry, there is a section summarizing
some of the supporting research.
