Abstract: In this review of the literature on turnarounds-both in education in the organizational literature-the author uses document analysis and coding to define "turnaround" as a concept, as a condition, and as a process and consequence. Using these definitions, the review concludes that leadership (and changing leadership) is key to the success of turnaround. The literature suggests that managers can be part of the problem and unable to perform. Sometimes they are restrained by the existing culture. The type of leadership matters, and replacement of leadership signals a change in the organization.
