Abstract: This study was a meta-analysis of research on the effects of leadership on academic and nonacademic student outcomes. The purpose was to examine the direct and indirect impact of specific leadership types-tranformational and instructional-on students' academic and social achievement. Twenty-seven studies published in English, including journals from the United States, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand , and the Netherlands, were reviewed to compare the effects of transformational and instructional leadership. The study found that instructional leadership had a significantly stronger effect on student outcomes than transformational leadership. It also found that certain leadership factors-leadership in teacher professional development, leadership for safe and orderly school environments, and leadership with a strong focus on teaching and learning-were more correlated, both directly and indirectly, to student social and academic outcomes.
