Author: Spillane, James P.; White, Kathryn Weitz; Stephan, Jennifer L.

Abstract: This research study explored the differences in problem-solving skills between experienced principals and aspiring principals and whether they employ different problem-solving processes. The study used a variety of situation scenarios that were not fully illustrative to measure 22 problem-solving processes. The study found that experienced principals were more likely to take a local rather than global view of a problem and were more likely to make assumptions about a scenario and were more like to take a short-term approach to a problem rather than a long-term approach.
