Title: The Importance of Principals: Site Administrators' Roles in Novice Teacher Induction Author: Wood, Ann. L. Year: 2005 Publication Information: American Secondary Education, v33 n2 p39-63 ERIC number: EJ692487 Abstract: How do principals influence novice teacher induction? The question as to the roles principals play in supporting novice teachers spurred this experiment. Principals from 54 urban Californian schools were surveyed: 8 high schools, 4 middle schools, and 42 elementary schools. Five elementary and secondary schools were then selected for further study. Principals were then surveyed on a Likert-scale survey administered to all district principals at grade-level site administrators' meetings. Focus group meetings were conducted wherein mentors were questioned on the induction program. Teachers and principals were then interviewed. From the study, findings revealed that principals have five leadership roles in new teacher induction: (a) school culture builder, (b) instructional leader, and (c) coordinator of mentors; but principals also act as (d) novice teacher recruiters, and (e) novice teacher advocate/retainers. The sample of principals for this study demonstrated high levels of leadership in novice teacher induction.
