Abstract: In this article, the authors review work redesign theory from the field of organizational science to examine the application of distributed leadership practices to education. The fundamentals of work redesign theory-specifically Hackman and Oldhams' Job Characteristics Model-are revised to apply to educational leadership. This revised theoretical model is use to frame the six case studies conducted on schools that were implementing distributed leadership practice.
